Chess Olympiad 2024 in Budapest: Who will win Open section?
197 teams have registered for the open section of the 45th Chess Olympiad to be held in Buda Pest. As it turns out, not every team will go to Buda Pest for different reasons. But this Olympiad is set to break the participation record.
In terms of teams, Team USA is ranked 1st, Team India is 2nd and Team China is 3rd. All the members stand out as ranking favorites due to their average rating of more than 2700.

Aronian and Ray Robson have built an excellent roster that has brought the average rating to 2758. USA’s No. 1 Hikaru Nakamura (2802) is not part of the game. 5th with Hans Niemann (2733) and also out of the game. The USA has an extensive Olympiad record, competing in 40 Olympiads and winning 6 gold, 6 silver, 8 bronze medals. The team’s most recent successes were gold in 2016 and silver in 2018, with Nakamura playing on both occasions.
Many teams participated in India’s home Olympics in Chennai, and the young team did well. Gokesh D and the rest of the team (Sarin, Praganandha, Adhiban and Sadhwani) won the bronze medal. Three players from the youth team made this year’s roster. India’s number one Arjun Erigisi (21), followed by Gokesh (18), Praganandha (19), Vidit (29) and Harikushna (38) lead the age squad. All India’s top stars will be in action. India has so far won the 2020 Online Chess Olympiad together with bronze medals in 2014 and 2022. Now, they are stronger than ever and will surely aim for gold.
