Best Moments of Sportsmanship in Olympic History
Sportsmanship is an ethos in which a player encourages other players by his words and by giving his award. By this he wins not only the hearts but also the souls of the people. Such players don’t let short shrift on their greatness get in the way of empathy.
I present to you some such moments
Cameron McEvoy – 2016 Rio Olympic Games
McEvoy was the hot favorite in the 100m freestyle in Rio when he finished a heartbreaking seventh, an incredible result for him. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, McEvoy hugged teammate and gold medalist Kyle Chalmers and celebrated his celebration as his own.
Momiji Nishiya with Rayssa Leal
Japan’s Momiji Nishiya and Brazil’s Rayssa competed at the Tokyo Olympics at a young age and won gold and silver medals. After winning medals in women’s street skateboarding, 13-year-olds Momiji Nishiya and Rayssa Leal shared a memorable sweet exchange of hugs and congratulations.
Isaiah Jewet and Nijel Amos
Competition in the Olympics is not just about running on a track, but also about competing with other athletes. That’s exactly what happened in the 800m semi-final with Isaiah Jewett and Botswana’s Nigel Amos.
Jewett was just ahead of Amos and it was only in the final moments of the game that Amos hit Jewett on the heel and both fell. The two got down on their knees, held hands, stood up and embraced. Amos apologized and the two began walking toward the finish line, Jewett’s arm around Amos. Both crossed the finish line together. Amos let Jewett go ahead.
