Introduction

To play a game or watch a match, it is important to know all the rules of the game. So that everyone can enjoy the game. The purpose of this article is to let you know the basic rules, fouls and violations of basketball.

The match is between 12 players of two teams. 5 players from one team can play at a time and 5 from the other team. In official matches both teams have 5*5 players. Your team has to score more than the other team. The team that scores the most points at the end of the match wins.

Time

Each match is divided into 4 quarters. Each quarter is 12 minutes and the entire match is 48 minutes. There is an interval of 2 minutes between the first two and the last two quarters. There is a 15-minute interval between the two halves. The total time in India is 40 matches. There are 4 quarters of 10 minutes each. The total time depends on the tournament taken by.

Score & Courts Dimensions

A basketball court is rectangular in shape with a length of 91 feet and a width of 50 feet. There is a line in the center of the ground that divides the ground into two parts. There is a circle in the middle of this line where the game starts. The referee tosses the ball in the air and players from both teams try to get the ball for their respective teams. There are 2 baskets on both sides of the ground which are 10 feet high.

The three-point arc is the outer ring, while the center is the key that includes the free throw line. 3 points are awarded for scoring a basket from behind this 3-point arc. If the foot is over or inside the line, 2 points are awarded for scoring a basket. Shaded area called paint. The line at the end is also called the free throw line. If a free-throw foul is awarded, the ball is thrown from this point and you get one point.

Players

After receiving the ball a player has 3 options. He can dribble the ball forward or pass the ball to another player or he can shoot the ball. Each player has their own positions. Which are as follows.

  • Point Guard
  • Shooting Guard
  • Small Forward
  • Power Forward
  • Center

Point Guard

You have the shortest person in your team, who has very good ball passing skills.

Center

The tallest man on the team whose job is to block shots, go to the point, score baskets, and grab rebounds.

Foul

A player can commit only 5 fouls in a match after which he is expelled from the team and cannot participate in the match again. A team can only commit 5 fouls in a quarter after which the other team gets a free hit. Some of the fouls are as follows:

  • Personal Foul
  • Technical Foul
  • Flagrant Foul
  • Free throw Foul

Personal Foul

Hitting or pushing or knocking someone down. Doing so will result in a foul being credited to your account. The ball is passed to the other team.

Technical Foul

Arguing with the referee’s decision or taunting the other team after they make a basket. After 2 technical fouls you are ejected from the team and have to sit out the entire match.

Flagrant Foul

Deliberately pushing or hurting another player. It is considered the biggest foul in basketball. After this one foul by the player, he is ejected from the game and the ball is given to the other team.

Free throw Foul

If the shooter is in the air and he is shooting the ball towards the basket, then the defender’s job is to jump and hit the ball with his hands, which is called a ball block. If the defender’s hand touches the shooter’s body or hand while blocking the ball, it is called a shooting foul.

If the shooter is shooting from behind the three-point line, he gets 3 free throws when fouled. Each free throw is worth one point. If the shooter is shooting from beyond the three-point line, he gets 2 free throws if fouled. If the ball goes inside the basket during a shooting foul, a point will also count and an extra free throw will be awarded.

Violations

Different types of violations in basketball are

  • Carrying
  • Double Dribble
  • Backcourt Violation
  • 8-Second Violation
  • 24-Second Violation
  • 3-Second Violation
  • 5-Second Violation

Walking / Travel

It is very important for a player to dribble the ball while carrying the ball forward. If the player moves forward with the ball in hand, it is called a violation.

Carrying Violation

Having your hand under the ball while dribbling is called a carrying volley. If you want to catch the ball, you can catch the ball from the side or above. After this violation, the ball is given to the other team. It is very important to take 2 steps for a layup, only then it will be a legal layup. There is also a violation of more than 2 steps.

Double Dribble

Can dribble the ball with one hand. Dribbling with both hands will be considered a violation. While dribbling the ball, hold the ball and stand still and think what to do next. This will also be a double dribble violation and the ball will be awarded to the other team.

Backcourt Violation

Once you pass the half court, you cannot go back to your own court. The ball will be passed to the other team.

Time related Violations are

8-Second Violation

Stopping for more than 8 seconds while dribbling on your side is a time-related violation. And the ball will be given to the other team.

24-Second Violation

A team has only 24 seconds after passing half court or it will also be a violation.

3-Second Violation

No player of either team can stay in the paint area for more than 3 seconds.

5-Second Violation

You only have 5 seconds if the ball goes out of bounds. This is also called in-board violation
